Former Premier League boss says ‘unbelievable’ talent is Sunderland’s ‘best buy of the summer’
Sunderland spent more money this summer than they have ever spent during a single transfer window.
Given that all three promoted sides have suffered instant relegation over the last two years, the Black Cats have done all they can to avoid the same fate.
Granit Xhaka was Sunderland’s headline arrival, bringing a wealth of experience and quality to Wearside.
However, it is another player that the Premier League club have signed who has been hailed as the best of the summer.

Martin Jol names Brian Brobbey as best summer signing
After Chelsea recalled Marc Guiu from his Sunderland loan, the North East club were in a race to secure a replacement.
However, on deadline day, Sunderland signed Brobbey on a permanent deal from Ajax for a reported fee of £21.6million.
The Netherlands international endured a difficult last season in the Eredivisie, but has hit some admirable numbers in the past.
Now, former Tottenham manager Jol believes that the striker could be the Wearsiders’ best signing of the summer.
- Brobbey made 80 goal contributions in 163 Ajax appearances
- He has one goal in eight Netherlands appearances
- Scored seven goals in all competitions last summer
“Probably the best buy of the summer. Sunderland have done well,” Jol said via Betway on 10 September.
“Don’t get me wrong, Brobbey scored four league goals; he didn’t play all the games.
“Look at his goal record. He’s young, he still scored 50 goals in 140 matches. He won’t score one in two because that’s only for the Keanes, the Berbatovs, Suarezs, Isaks, Kanes, and the Haalands of this world. But you’re still a good striker if you score one in three.
“It won’t be easy for him to get in as regularly, but give him a bit of time. He’s strong as a horse; he’s not great in the air, but he’s an unbelievable anchor man. You can give him the ball, and he can hold it up. I think he’ll do well.”

When could Sunderland supporters see Brian Brobbey in action?
Sunderland face Crystal Palace this Saturday as they aim to make it three wins from four in the Premier League.
So far, Regis Le Bris has started Eliezer Mayenda in all three league games, but there is every chance he could rotate against the Eagles.
Indeed, Brobbey has been training ahead of the match and is available, but it could be argued that Wilson Isidor is more deserving of a start.
Isidor has bagged two goals in three Premier League appearances from the bench and has earned an opportunity.
However, given Brobbey’s physical presence, he could cause the Palace backline some real problems.
While he is unlikely to start, there is every chance that Sunderland supporters will see their new signing come on from the bench.
