Finance Expert reacts as Sunderland could join new multi-club owner model

Dan Plumley believes the multi-club ownership model would be different financially for Sunderland amid Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ links with Vasco da Gama.

The hierarchy at Sunderland has completely changed the fortunes of the Black Cats with a heavy focus on a youth-orientated approach that has seen them thrive in recent years.

However, it was reported by UOL in December that Louis-Dreyfus was looking to expand his footballing network with the purchase of Brazillian outfit Vasco da Gama.

Speaking exclusively to Mackem News, the football finance expert admitted huge money won’t be involved but more multi-club models could fall into the Championship.

“It’s slightly different in terms of the finances,” explained Plumley.

“You’re not talking as huge amounts of money, but we know that the Championship is a huge league and we know there are some significantly large clubs within that league and you would put Sunderland into that bracket.

There are a lot of clubs that are looking at being either part of a multi-club ownership group or wanting to become that flagship, and I think we will see more of it in the Championship.

I think it’s a model that everyone’s looking at, so it doesn’t surprise me to see this kind of thing, it’s obviously an interesting link with what you trying to do with it strategy-wise, is that about player movement?

We know a lot of clubs are looking to South America for talent nowadays, more so than ever after Brexit, so there are lots of angles to come at this from.

Sunderland have the stature to develop worldwide links

“Principally we’ve seen it happen at some of the biggest clubs so far across the European network, but it’s also stretching out across the world now and I think it will become more and more of a thing into the Championship as well.

“There’s some big clubs with some big infrastructure and brand proposition around it as well that, that can appeal to a multi-club ownership network, and the owners are evolving as well to kind of get into that space and see the benefits.”

Sunderland certainly have the fanbase and facilities to see their stature across world football expand and with further international links, it can only be seen as a positive going forward.

While little has been made of the Brazillian link since, it is certainly one to keep an eye on.
