Finance Expert: January transfer spend more tempting to Sunderland now

Sunderland may be tempted to invest in the upcoming January transfer window in hopes of achieving promotion, Dan Plumley has said.

The Black Cats are currently winless in six but still sit fourth in the Championship table under Regis Le Bris, only five points off leaders Sheffield United.

Speaking exclusively to Mackem News, Plumley, a football finance expert, admitted that it will be fascinating to see what Sunderland does in the transfer window with promotion at stake.

I think tempting is the word and I think with Sunderland they are ultimately performing above expectations anyway at this point in the season,” he said.

They might not have particularly budgeted or planned for that kind of best-case scenario. If you are in that mix in January it does become more tempting to go into the market for sure and extend your appetite for risk.

“It’d be a really fascinating look at what Sunderland do in the market in January if anything and also I think that the other side of that is there’s probably a couple of clubs going to come looking at some of their players as well.

January will test the ambition of Sunderland hierarchy

“That’s the other side of the equation but yeah, certainly more tempting if you’re at the top of the table in January, particularly in the Championship where we know you can land the Premier League jackpot which can add £100 million to the revenue line overnight.”

With the likes of Jobe Bellingham linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund (The Sun) and Chris Rigg linked with a switch to Manchester United (Sunderland AFC News), much of the focus will be on retaining talent.

Regis Le Bris has a good squad of players at his disposal, with several still to come back from injury but there remain some glaring weaknesses in the side that must be resolved in January.

All eyes are on the Stadium of Light.
