Fabio Carvalho update alerts Sunderland as winter transfer approach ready – Exclusive
Fabio Carvalho has emerged as a target for Sunderland, Mackem News understands.
Sunderland are fourth in the Premier League after nine games, and as a result, plans are already being put in place to strengthen their chances of survival.
Regis Le Bris will lose several first-team players to AFCON, with the likes of Noah Sadiki, Chemsdine Talbi, Habib Diarra and Reinildo among the names of those who will be jetting off to the competition.
January’s transfer business is likely to be slightly affected by that, with the latest update surrounding Carvalho putting the Black Cats on high alert.
Sunderland need creative reinforcements this winter
Sunderland will lose three attackers for AFCON, all of whom have played a fairly significant role for the Black Cats so far this season.
As a result, it is one area that the Wearsiders will be looking to add to, and Mackem News understands that Carvalho is one of those being considered.
On Sunday, an update emerged from Florian Plettenberg that Brentford could sanction a loan departure for the former Liverpool creator, with the Bundesliga looking like a strong option.
However, sources have indicated that Sunderland, Leeds, and Wolves all hold an interest and could make an approach for the 23-year-old in January.
Carvalho typically occupies a central role, but can also feature on either flank or in a deeper midfield position, similar to what has happened with Enzo Le Fee over the last nine months.
A move to Sunderland could be a chance for the 23-year-old to rekindle the form that saw him emerge with so much potential, which has not been on show recently since his move to Brentford.

The Portuguese creator has started just one Premier League game for the Bees, and Keith Andrew seems not overly fond of using him regularly.
Paul Merson once hailed Fabio Carvalho as a ‘top talent’
Carvalho really was the next big thing when he emerged on the first team scene for Fulham, and his first full season in senior football showcased his potential.
In 38 Championship appearances, 19-year-old Carvalho scored 10 goals and assisted a further eight, before making the move to Liverpool.
Carvalho’s Championship stats with Fulham
- Chances created – 60
- Completed passes – 821
- Successful dribbles – 43
- Duels won – 166
- Tackles – 39
Upon his arrival at Anfield, Paul Merson told Sports Keeda: “Fabio Carvalho is not someone who will start from week one for Liverpool, but this guy is a top talent and played a big role in Fulham’s promotion bid last season.
“I think this is the kind of signing other managers might look at and think, ‘Why didn’t we get him?’ because he’s a fantastic talent.”
His potential was obvious, and Sunderland have already shown a willingness to provide a home to nurture these former wonderkids, and they could do it again this winter.
