Eliezer Mayenda shares most important factor in Sunderland win v Sheff Utd

Eliezer Mayenda said team spirit was the most important factor as Sunderland defeated Sheffield United and thanked supporters for their backing.

The Black Cats secured a crucial three points on New Year’s Day with a 2-1 win over the Blades as their hunt for promotion goes on.

Mayenda played a starring role in the clash with a goal and an assist and in his post-match interview on club channels, he alluded to the past few games in which he has received criticism for his performances.

“Individually, I think today was a good game for me, better than the last two games,” explained the Spaniard.

“So I worked very hard last week to be better every game, and I’m very happy for the win, and collectively we played very well today.

“I think the most important was just the team spirit. That is the big thing before, and everybody says we need to work hard today to win the game, and that’s it. I want to thank all the fans for the support.”

Eliezer Mayenda can play a huge role for Sunderland

While some of his performances this season haven’t been up to standard, many seem to forget that this is his first full season in senior football having arrived as a 17-year-old from France.

For him to have seven goal contributions with everything considered is remarkable and it is a testament to the ability he possesses on his day with consistency his only real concern.

However, given his age and lack of experience, that is to be expected and that is one of the downfalls that comes with the club’s youth-orientated approach.

If Mayenda can maintain that level of performance, he can play a huge role in the Black Cats bid to achieve promotion and with several players still to come back from injury, they are in an excellent spot.

Any concerns over his ability to influence the season have surely been curtailed after what was a remarkable performance against the Blades.
