Eliezer Mayenda makes feelings known amid Sunderland contract developments
Sunderland have completed substantial business this summer, with north of £100million spent on new signings.
Habib Diarra is a record acquisition at Sunderland after he arrived from RC Strasbourg for £30m.
The Black Cats are also looking to strengthen their attack and are closing in on a loan deal for Chelsea’s Marc Guiu.
However, now they have been taking action on their play-off winning squad, with significant developments involving Eliezer Mayenda.

Sunderland tie up Mayenda contract
Given that the Black Cats are closing in on a striker, many were wondering what that means for Mayenda and Wilson Isidor.
Mayenda has enjoyed an incredible transformation on Wearside after a fruitless loan spell with Hibernian in 2024. The 20-year-old made his mark last season and contributed two vital goals in the play-offs against Coventry City and Sheffield United.
Competition | Goals | Assists |
Championship | 8 | 5 |
Championship play-offs | 2 | 0 |
His power and turn of pace make him a handful for defenders, and he has shown his versatility by playing on the wing.
The Spaniard is clearly a long-term option, given the latest news coming out of the Stadium of Light.
That is because Sunderland have agreed a new deal for Mayenda, which is set to be signed very soon, according to Fabrizio Romano (6 August).
The Italian journalist reports that the deal will be valid until 2030, and despite interest from other clubs, Mayenda only wanted the Wearsiders.
Sunderland make statement of intent with Mayenda deal
The 20-year-old has developed into a fan favourite at the Stadium of Light and even has an affectionate song involving Sam Fender.
Given his age and the promise he has already shown, the deal to keep him on Wearside must be regarded as excellent business.
Interest from other clubs is unsurprising, and there have been reports that West Ham were eyeing Mayenda.
- Mayenda enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2024/25
- Scored the equaliser in the play-off final
- Had interest from other clubs
However, the North East is the ideal place for him to develop his game and aid Sunderland’s survival push. Of course, he will have to fight for his place, but he has shown his desire to be a leading player for the Black Cats.
