Eberechi Eze seems to mock Sunderland as he speaks out about rejection

Sunderland may be their own worst enemies in the transfer market when it comes to signing players.

Regis Le Bris has no doubt built a great side at Sunderland. The Black Cats are now just two games away from the Premier League as they lead Coventry in the playoffs.

Much of this is thanks to the transfer market, with signings such as Wilson Isidor and Chris Mepham being fantastic since they joined in the summer.

However, it has now been revealed that the Black Cats rejected an opportunity to sign England international Eberechi Eze earlier in his career.

Eberechi Eze reflects on Sunderland’s rejection

Sunderland’s transfers over the years have always been hit and miss. The signing of Enzo Le Fee in the winter window was masterful by Le Bris.

In comparison, the less said about Jack Rodwell’s time at the Stadium of Light, the better.

However, Sunderland may have made one of their worst transfer decisions ever a few years back.

Current England international and FA Cup finalist Eze has been on fire since he joined Crystal Palace in 2020.

The 26-year-old is one of the most sought-after names in the Premier League, with numerous clubs such as Manchester United interested in his services.

Eze had earlier revealed via the Chronicle Live (17 April) that he was rejected by Sunderland after a trial.

Now, he has followed up on these reports in a recent interview with Andrew Mensah (10 May).

When asked if he was thought of the rejection after the Sunderland Til’ I Die documentary came out, he joked: “Steaming. I would have been part of it.”

However, this was then followed by him stating that: “Clear that I didn’t do what I should have done. But it’s not like I was playing like I am playing now, and I’m getting released.”

Sunderland have missed out on millions due to Eze rebuff

While it is impossible to know if Eze would have still become the player he is today if he went to Sunderland, he would have still been an incredible player for the Black Cats.

In the Championship, QPR turned the attacking midfielder into one of the biggest stars in the league before he left for Palace.

With it now likely that he leaves the London club for a big fee this summer, Sunderland’s rejection has no doubt cost them millions.

There may not be a better player that the Black Cats have turned down in their history, and this will likely haunt whoever was at the helm to this day.
