Don Goodman shares absolute certainty over Tommy Watson at Sunderland

Don Goodman has been impressed with Tommy Watson’s performances at Sunderland prior to the injury sustained against Bristol City.

The Black Cats have relied on their youth system this season, with Watson the latest to come through the academy ranks and impressing after scoring a brace against Stoke City.

An unfortunate injury sustained against the Robins halted the progress made by the teen, but Goodman told Mackem News that he has been impressed with how he has adapted to senior football.

“I’ve been very impressed with him because I’ve seen him have brilliant games,” explained Goodman. “I’ve also seen him have not-so-brilliant games, where his decision-making and his choices have left a little bit to be desired.

“So ultimately, that’s good because here you’ve got a player who, before his injury, was having a positive impact on games with goals and assists and causing general chaos to opponents. And he’s only going to get better because he is going to start making better choices on the pitch.

“I see a player with such potential that if coached properly and if taught properly, ultimately what defines the levels in players is the choices that they make, decision making.

“He’s a very, very exciting young player who will, I am 100 per cent certain, only get better.”

Tommy Watson has a big role to play for Sunderland

Despite only making his senior debut this season, Watson has already had a telling impact on Wearside and once he returns from injury, his role will only get bigger.

His performances prior to injury provided a real sense of optimism and the comparisons to Jack Clarke are blatantly obvious given his preference to cut inside and offer an attacking threat, but his ability to get down the line has been just as impressive.

Ultimately, the more attacking options the Black Cats have available, the better, and if the club can add some reinforcements in January, they will find themselves in an excellent position to go on and fight for promotion.

With Watson and Romaine Mundle both to come back from injury, keeping up at the top of the table remains the key aim for the moment, which aside from a blip in their recent fixture with Stoke, the Black Cats have been able to do.
