Don Goodman reacts to Sunderland transfer ‘gamble’ he’s told about

Sunderland are pushing ahead with transfer plans already as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.

The Black Cats face a tough challenge next season, with many already tipping them for relegation, following the trend of the past six promoted sides.

With the transfer window in full swing, Sunderland are already looking to add to their permanent signing of Enzo Le Fee.

However, Don Goodman has delivered a warning after recent new links.

Reims defender on Sunderland radar

Cedric Kipre has been linked with a move to Sunderland, just 12 months after leaving West Brom.

Speaking to Football League World (4 June), Goodman has shared concerns after the fate of Reims in Ligue 1 with the Ivorian at the back.

“He’s just played a season in Ligue 1 for Reims, and they got relegated, although that was mostly because they struggled to score goals – only two teams scored less than them,” he said.

“Nevertheless, if you play in a relegated team, you are part of that scenario.

“Other than that, has he displayed the attributes and capabilities of a Premier League defender? I’m not so sure. It would be a gamble, but sometimes gambles pay off.”

Kipre to fight against Premier League uncertainty

Before his move to Reims, Kirpe was tipped to join a Premier League club last season, but the move never materialised.

The move to Sunderland may come as a surprise, but the Mackems will need defensive reinforcements – and Kirpe could be the answer.

He enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career at West Brom in 2023/24, earning Player of the Year honours during his time at The Hawthorns.

However, the jump from Championship to Premier League football is significant, and for a newly promoted side like Sunderland, a more experienced defender might be the safer option.

Other issues, such as Jobe Bellingham’s expected departure, have added to Sunderland’s challenges as they prepare for the weeks ahead.

The Mackems will need to take a different approach, especially with all three promoted teams from the last two seasons going straight back down.

Black Cats fans are full of hope ahead of the new campaign, but they could be in for a rollercoaster season.
