Dermot Gallagher in disagreement with Reinildo claim after Sunderland incident vs Arsenal
Arsenal fans were adamant that Reinildo should have been sent off for Sunderland.
Sunderland‘s away woes continued in a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday, though the result perhaps didn’t showcase the level of performance from the Black Cats.
In the first half in particular, Regis Le Bris’ side looked competitive, but again, without posing much of a threat in the final third.
Goals from Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres made sure of all three points for the Gunners, but it was an incident prior to one of them that left Arsenal supporters fuming.
Reinildo escapes red card after Viktor Gyokeres goal
At least two of Arsenal’s three goals were avoidable, with the first one coming as a result of Omar Alderetre overplaying it in his own half, which led to the Gunners getting possession back and then going on to score.
The Paraguayan could have again done better with the second, having almost moved out of the way of Gyokere’s shot, leaving Robin Roefs with no chance.
His second of the night was unavoidable given the context of the game, though that is where most ofc the controversy stems from.
After Gyokeres slid the ball into an empty net, Reinildo lunged into a challenge on the Swedish striker, attempting to block it.
However, those efforts fell short, and he ended up catching Gyokeres quite high on his leg, with Jay Bothroyd, as well as many Arsenal supporters, adamant that it should have been a red.
Via Ref Watch, he said: “I think that’s a red card. That’s dangerous. He’s lunging, out of control, high. If he missed that, I think he would then get a red card.”
However, Dermot Gallagher viewed the incident differently and said: “I don’t think it’s a red card. I think he’d get a yellow card [if he missed].”
Brian Brobbey also involved in controversy vs Arsenal
Alan Shearer had lots of praise for Brian Brobbey and the way he caused issues all afternoon, but the Dutchman was also the subject of a VAR check for a tackle on Zubimendi.
The Dutchman clearly made contact with the Spaniard, and a few seconds after the incident, play was brought back, and he was cautioned.
VAR cleared it for a potential red card offence, and once again, Gallagher believes they were right to do so.
He said: “Brobbey’s knee is bent so there’s not a massive impact, and he lands on Zubimendi’s foot. He doesn’t follow through and he’s actually pulling out.”
