Dennis Cirkin injury update as Sunderland star hits complications in recovery
Dennis Cirkin’s absence from the Sunderland squad may be extended after a new update.
The 23-year-old has been unavailable for six months after suffering a severe wrist injury and complications with his knee.
Cirkin has been outstanding for Sunderland in the Championship, yet he hasn’t been able to play a part in the Premier League under Regis Le Bris.
Injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar has spoken exclusively to Mackem News on Cirkin’s current condition.

Dennis Cirkin faces further problems with wrist injury
Cirkin joined Sunderland from Tottenham in 2021 and has made 116 appearances against the Black Cats.
The left-back was an integral part of Sunderland‘s promotion-winning squad, yet a wrist injury he sustained over the summer has left him sidelined ever since.
Cirkin last featured on 24 May, and it doesn’t look like he’ll make a return to first-team action until after the international break.
| Stat | Cirkin |
| Appearances | 36 |
| Goals | 3 |
| Assists | 2 |
| Pass accuracy | 78.4% |
| Ground duels won | 52.7% |
Dr Brar has shed light on the complications with Cirkin’s injury, and it’s not good news for Le Bris.
He said: “Based on club updates, there were complications with how his wrist healed, and he’s also been dealing with a knee issue, so the club has extended his return runway.”
Cirkin is expected to return by the end of November, but it will take a while before he is fully fit enough to play a role in Sunderland’s season.

When looking at the Sunderland squad, left-back is one of the positions where depth has been added, and Cirkin’s return would provide further security ahead of the African Cup of Nations.
Dennis Cirkin’s return could hugely benefit the Sunderland squad
Reinildo joined Sunderland on a free transfer after his contract expired at Atletico Madrid in June.
Reinildo’s red card against Aston Villa left him unavailable for the three Premier League matches earlier in the season, which sparked some worry.
Arthur Masuaku’s performances were less than ideal as he came in for Reinildo, and he was subsequently dropped for the 2-0 win over Wolves.
Whilst it’s not clear if the 23-year-old is ready to make the step up to Premier League football, he has been an incredible servant for Le Bris.
Should Reinildo be injured or suspended, Cirkin would be the perfect replacement, and he would offer a greater attacking threat down the left-hand side.
With AFCON coming, it could open the door at the perfect time for him.
