Dennis Cirkin exit update as ‘Tottenham look into Sunderland deal’

Sunderland face a battle to keep Dennis Cirkin and some of his teammates on Wearside this summer.

Cirkin, 23, joined Sunderland from Tottenham’s youth team in 2021 and has impressed since breaking into the first team at the Stadium of Light.

As the Mackems approach their first Premier League campaign in eight years, they must weigh up whether to sell their wing-back, with his former club keen.

Tottenham weigh up to bring Cirkin back to the capital

Cirkin was a mainstay in Regis Le Bris’ side last season, playing 39 times as Sunderland won the play-offs.

The Ireland-born defender has joined the likes of Chris Rigg and Eliezer Mayenda in a list of players linked with a move away from Wearside in recent weeks.

According to Football.London, Spurs have looked at bringing Cirkin back to the capital.

Cirkin has just 12 months remaining on his contract, and Tottenham will receive a sell-on fee for the 23-year-old if he does go elsewhere.

This means that if Spurs were to make a move, they would get the defender for a cut price.

The Lilywhites did have a buy-back clause for Cirkin which expired last year.

Full-back is a priority for Thomas Frank’s new side, but Sunderland are looking to prioritise incomings in the coming weeks as they look to avoid the fate of all three of last season’s promoted teams.

The Mackems have already lost Bellingham this month, but the profit made from the youngster will help Regis Le Bris’ side break their transfer record once again this summer.

Another player linked with a move to their former side is Jordan Henderson, who is on Sunderland’s radar.

The Sunderland-born midfielder left the Black Cats for Liverpool in 2011 and has gone on to win the Premier League and Champions League.

The 35-year-old has now been cast out by Dutch side Ajax, with a return to England looking inevitable.

Sunderland must avoid selling Cirkin

Sunderland must avoid becoming a selling club before they have even set foot inside the Premier League.

Cirkin was key to the Black Cats’ impressive defensive record last season, and in a campaign where Sunderland will have to suffer, the defender will be key.

The England youth international offers pace but also defensive resilience, which will be crucial if they have any chance of staying up.
