Daniel Sturridge rips into Sunderland star who ‘got it wrong’ vs Man City – ‘Not good enough’
Sunderland held Manchester City to a 0-0 draw at the Stadium of Light, putting in a superb defensive display.
Leeds managed to hold Sunderland to a 1-1 draw last Sunday, but a point against Pep Guardiola’s side is a massive result for the Black Cats.
Regis Le Bris’s side now sit seventh in the Premier League, just one point behind fifth-placed Chelsea at the midway point of the campaign.
It could have been even better for Sunderland, though, who squandered a massive chance to open the scoring against City.
Brian Brobbey misses golden chance for Sunderland
In the early stages of Sunderland’s clash with Man City, Brian Brobbey latched onto a long ball from Nordi Mukiele.
The 23-year-old showed incredible strength to leave City centre back Ruben Dias on the floor, and looked certain to score the opener with just Gianluigi Donnarumma to beat.
However, Brobbey could only fire his shot straight at Donnarumma’s chest, wasting a golden opportunity to put his side in front.
Former Liverpool and England striker Sturridge was critical of the Dutch international, insisting he should have tried to finish into the far corner rather than at the near post.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “You’ve got so much time. Sometimes it’s good for players, sometimes it’s bad. Clearly, it was bad for him.
“You see the far post, you see the space, and you see the time. He aims to go for the near post, right at the goalkeeper, so it wasn’t good enough. I truly believe he has to aim for the far post; he’s got it wrong.”
Brian Brobbey has one flaw to his game
Brobbey has been excellent for Sunderland so far this season, and he once again had an impact on proceedings against Man City.
The former Ajax man holds the ball up so well, and is more than a match for any defender in the Premier League with his physicality, which has helped the Black Cats on numerous occasions.
However, the young forward clearly needs to work on his decision-making in key areas, as he often chooses the wrong pass or shot.
Brobbey still has lots of time to develop, and his execution will undoubtedly improve as he gets more experience, which will lead to him becoming a more complete number nine.
He will eventually put those types of chances away, Mackems supporters just have to be patient, as he is still adapting to the English game, and that takes time.
He has shown plenty of promise since moving to Wearside already, and it may be a matter of time before he becomes the complete striker that Le Bris requires.
