Dan Neil drops a stinker, two 3/10s – Sunderland player ratings v Coventry

Sunderland embarrassed themselves this afternoon with a more than deserved 3-0 defeat away to Coventry City, all but ending any minimal hopes of a top-two finish.

After having to settle for a point in their previous 1-1 draw against Preston, Sunderland were aware of the importance of getting a win against Coventry.

Regis Le Bris’ side were the perceived underdogs heading into the game, though very few would have anticipated the level of performance that ensued against Frank Lampard’s side.

The Sky Blues took all three points in a 3-0 win, and Mackem News rates the performance of each player.

Sunderland fail to impress against Lampard’s Sky Blues

Anthony Patterson – 5

He couldn’t have done much with the goals conceded and was let down by the players in front of him throughout the clash. Made a great save in the second half to deny Bobby Thomas. Perhaps too slow to leave his line for the third.

Trai Hume – 5

The best out of the back four, but still far away from being anywhere near good enough. Sloppy on the ball but defended his side of the pitch fairly well.

Chris Mepham – 3

Made a hopeless challenge to concede a penalty for the second goal and just looked uncomfortable all afternoon.

Luke O’Nien – 4

Quite erratic from O’Nien today. Similar to Hume, he was okay defensively, but again, way below his usual standards.

Dennis Cirkin – 4 (for Seelt 69′)

Comfortable on the ball and retained possession, but a few sloppy moments allowed Coventry to pile even more pressure on the defence. He was extremely fortunate to receive a foul in his own box after Milan Van Ewijk got the better of him.

Dan Neil struggles massively for Sunderland v Coventry

Dan Neil – 2 (for Isidor 56′)

Neil has been outstanding for Sunderland this season, but his display against Lampard’s side was dreadful. Tried to overplay the ball far too often and lost it, while being very sloppy when playing passes. Hooked after 56 minutes.

Chris Rigg – 3

After what was an excellent cameo against Preston, it seemed as though he was back to his best, but Rigg struggled to have any influence against Coventry.

Jobe Bellingham – 4

Following the theme from the day, Jobe was nowhere near good enough. Sloppy on the ball and looked to be a yard off the pace every time he was involved.

Patrick Roberts – 4 (for Browne 78′)

Didnt do an awful lot wrong but was just barely in the game. Tale of his season.

Mundle had little influence today

Romaine Mundle – 4 (for Watson 56′)

Plenty of effort, but next to nothing came off today. Always looked to cut back onto his right foot, which was easily sussed out by the Sky Blues.

Eliezer Mayenda – 5

Had no service whatsoever, and on the odd occasion he received it, he looked threatening. Created the only half-chances in the first half.

Subsitutions

Wilson Isidor – 4 (for Neil 56′)

Had an opportunity after his introduction but completely missed the target.

Tommy Watson – N/A (for Mundle 56′)

Hardly touched the ball.

Jensen Seelt – N/A (for Cirkin 69′)

Alan Browne – N/A (for Roberts 78′)
