Corry Evans finds new EFL club after Sunderland exit

Ex-Sunderland midfielder and skipper Corry Evans has joined League Two Bradford City following his release from the Black Cats last summer.

The Northern Ireland international had a troubled time on Wearside with injuries but when fit, provided a wealth of experience in the middle of the park and played a crucial role under Tony Mowbray aiding his side to finish inside the top six.

With over 350 appearances in the EFL, most of which were in the Championship, Evans should prove to be a neat pickup for the League Two side, who currently sit 14th.

Talking to the Bradford club channels [6 October], where the transfer was confirmed, Evans said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to join Bradford City. It’s a massive club with a passionate fanbase, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Corry Evans a key component of Sunderland midfield

Evans had a difficult start to life on Wearside following his arrival on a free from Blackburn Rovers in 2021, some performances leading to the occasional cheer when he was substituted.

However, his fortunes changed pretty quickly before becoming a mainstay in the Sunderland midfield in their League One promotion season as well as the following Championship season.

His experience proved to be invaluable in the development of Dan Neil, who is now occupying the role that was left by Evans.

Injuries did hamper his time on Wearside and an ACL tear in 2023 ruled the midfielder out for a total of 15 months, which would ultimately end his stay at the club barring a memorable return to action for the U23 side when he found the top corner with a thunderous strike from distance against Newcastle United.

One thing that was never in doubt was his attitude. Evans was a true professional and much of his work behind the scenes will have certainly gone unnoticed by many supporters.
