Throughout their history, Sunderland have spent the majority of their time in the top flight of English football but under the current leadership of Regis Le Bris, they find themselves in the Championship with the aim of returning to the Premier League for the first time since their relegation in 2017.

Sunderland honours
Sunderland are among the most historic football clubs in England but have failed to win any major silverware since their FA Cup triumph over Leeds United in 1973. The Black Cats have won ten major titles in their history, ranking them as the joint-13th most successful club in English football.
Total victories | Year(s) won | |
First Division | 6 | 1891-92, 1892-93, 1894-95, 1901-02, 1912-13, 1935-36 |
FA Cup | 2 | 1936-37, 1972-73 |
EFL Trophy | 1 | 2020-21 |
FA Charity Shield | 1 | 1936 |
Sunderland’s last trophy win came in the 2020-21 season when Lee Johnson led the Black Cats to winning the EFL Trophy, otherwise known as the Papa John’s Trophy at the time. With it being in the COVID season, supporters were not able to attend the game.

Sunderland home stadium
Sunderland moved into the Stadium of Light in 1997 and have called it home ever since. A 49,000 capacity makes it the ninth biggest stadium in England, with an estimated £23million budget behind its structure.
The first ever encounter took place on 30 July, 1997, when Ajax Amsterdam came to town. Sunderland went on to draw that game 0-0, though it was the start of plenty of excitement on Wearside.
