Cirkin concerns subdued at Sunderland after what Alan Browne did v Millwall

Alan Browne was forced to step in for the absence of Dennis Cirkin at Sunderland in their 1-0 victory against Millwall at the weekend.

Sunderland moved one step closer to promotion with a 1-0 victory over Millwall on Saturday afternoon, with Trai Hume’s volley proving to be the difference in the game.

However, prior to the game, several concerns emerged at Sunderland regarding the defensive injury crisis that followed the international break.

Cirkin was one of those ruled out of the clash, having been withdrawn from the England Under-21 squad, leaving many questioning how the Black Cats would cope without him in the team.

Thankfully, Browne was able to provide the answer.

Browne impresses on Sunderland audition

Browne has had a troubled start to life at Sunderland, with game time proving hard to come by given the form of Jobe Bellingham and co in midfield.

However, his versatility proved crucial for the Black Cats with the Irishman slotting in seamlessly at right back, with Hume shifting over to the opposite flank, and his display was more than worthy of his spot.

Via FotMob, Browne completed 89 per cent of his 28 attempted passes in the game, having made 62 touches throughout the clash.

Sunderland deserved their win.

Given his role, his defensive capabilities were put to the best and he came through that with shining colours, having won three of his four attempted tackles in the game alongside seven ground duels.

The 29-year-old made three interceptions and four recoveries, while being dribbled past on just one occasion.

His display certainly subdued some of the concerns that emerged in the absence of Cirkin, showcasing that he can do more than a job when needed.

Regis Le Bris needs Sunderland squad at full capacity

While there are positives to take from the game, the lack of options available is certainly the biggest concern at the moment ahead of the final seven games.

If promotion is to be achieved, Regis Le Bris will need as many players back to fitness as possible.

After what has been a successful campaign to date, the Black Cats won’t want to finish the season with nothing to show for all of their hard work.
