Chris Sutton rages at ‘nightmare’ Sunderland incident vs Aston Villa

Sunderland showed superb character to secure an unlikely 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats had it all to do after Reinildo was sent off for kicking out at Matty Cash after being pushed to the ground by the Poland international.

However, Regis Le Bris’ side came back fighting and secured a vital point thanks to Wilson Isidor’s cool finish past Emi Martinez.

Chris Sutton was on commentary duties for the Premier League battle and did not hold back on a certain incident.

Chris Sutton fumes at Reinildo after red card incident

Reinildo will likely miss Sunderland’s next three games after being sent off for violent conduct.

The left-back has performed well for the Wearsiders, but has now given away a penalty and been sent off in his first five Premier League appearances.

At first glance, it was difficult to see what the 31-year-old had done, but the replays painted a much clearer picture.

Cash gave Reinildo a faint shove, but as the left-back was falling to the ground, he inexplicably kicked his opponent with both feet while falling to the ground.

In classic Sutton fashion, he offered no sympathy for the defender and lamented his rash decision on Sky Sports.

“You can’t kick out like that,” Sutton said on 21 September.

“From Sunderland’s perspective, it’s an absolute nightmare. I can’t see this being overturned… It’s stupidity on his part.”

Reinildo must learn from Premier League mistakes for Sunderland

While the Wearside faithful will want their players to play for the badge, there is a line between passion and stupidity.

Indeed, Reinildo crossed that line at the Stadium of Light and is lucky that he did not cost his team a point.

In the short term, the 31-year-old will lose his place, but by the time he returns, he could face intense competition for the shirt.

That is because Dennis Cirkin and Leo Hjelde could be back fit, while Arthur Masuaku is primed for his chance.

Reinildo must now regain Le Bris’ trust, and if he does not learn from his mistakes, then he could be set for a place on the periphery.
