Chris Sutton apologises to Sunderland fans as prediction made for Aston Villa clash
Sunderland play host to Aston Villa at the Stadium of Light this weekend.
Premier League action returns again this weekend, as Sunderland look to continue their home form against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side are yet to score in the league this season, leaving them winless, while the Black Cats have picked up seven points from the first four games.
Despite the difference in the start to the season, Aston Villa are favourites to beat Sunderland, a sentiment shared by Sutton.

Sunderland predicted to lose winning streak
Sunderland have been the underdogs for every league encounter so far this season, and that narrative has suited them more often than not.
Last time out at the Stadium of Light, Wilson Isidor scored a last-minute header against Brentford to seal all three points for the Black Cats.
A similar outcome would be welcomed on Sunday, but Sutton has different ideas for the encounter.
Via his BBC Sport predictions, he said: “I haven’t backed Sunderland to win yet this season, and a few of their fans have been hammering me on social media because they have made a really good start.
Sunderland’s stats this season
- 4 games
- 2 wins
- 1 draw
- 1 loss
- 5 goals scored
- 3 goals conceded
“But I am not just going to back them to win for the sake of it, instead I am going to say Villa will come good, and for Ollie Watkins to not just get their first goal of the season, but to secure their first win too
“Apologies again to Sunderland fans for that – they can hammer me again this week if I’m wrong.”
Sutton went on to predict a 2-0 win for the Villans, which is bold considering they haven’t won a game yet this season.

Sunderland will see no harm in going under the radar
Despite the summer business and a great start to the season, Sunderland are seen by many as just another newly-promoted team.
They are tarnished with the same brush and immediately disregarded by most pundits who have more than likely not watched anything other than highlights.
The longer that goes on, the more it suits the Black Cats, who have been happy to prove their doubters wrong almost weekly over the last few months.
Sunday’s encounter with Villa at the Stadium of Light will be no different, and if they can secure another home win, it would send out yet another massive statement to the rest of the Premier League that they are not just here to make up the numbers.
