Chris Rigg proved me wrong with his performance for Sunderland vs Newcastle
Chris Rigg showcased his true ability in Sunderland’s latest victory over Newcastle.
Even at times in the Championship, I accused Rigg of being out of his depth, though a lot of that was down to Regis Le Bris’ decision to play him as a right-winger when it was clear that he was best suited centrally.
Admittedly, I wasn’t alone in that verdict.
Once again in the Premier League, the teenager has been utilised in the same area of the pitch, and more often than not, he has looked a yard off the pace.
But against Newcastle, we all saw a completely different side to Rigg’s game, and it could be the boost he needed to really see his career take off at the Stadium of Light.
Chris Rigg’s game by the numbers
For anyone who doubted whether Rigg was a true Mackem or not, those questions were answered by not only his celebrations after the game, but also his performance within it.
Given the lack of gametime he has had this season, and the fact he was again utilised in a wide area, many feared the proposition of him coming up against one of the best left-backs in the league, but he ran him ragged throughout.
As showcased by his Sofascore graphic below, Rigg won all five of his duels at St James’ Park, while also completing all three of his attempted crosses.

He completed three key passes and created three chances, while also hitting the target with one of his three shots.
Rigg was ruthless on the day, and after such an impressive performance in a game that meant so much, that may not be his spirit to lose.

What comes next for Rigg at Sunderland?
A few weeks ago, I would have thought that a loan move would have been the best scenario for Rigg in the summer, but now I’m not so sure.
The 18-year-old has clear quality, and it is down to Regis Le Bris to find a way of making the most of what he has to offer on a regular basis.
If that is to be on the wing, then his performance against Newcastle should subdue doubts, but if it is to be in the middle, then we all know how good he can be.
Rigg will be going nowhere in the summer, and if he gets more access to Gfametime in the Premier League, he will only get better.
