‘Chris Rigg destined to stay at Sunderland’ after £25.6m update

Chris Rigg could be set to stay at Sunderland for the foreseeable future despite regular transfer links away.

The 17-year-old has been superb for the Black Cats this campaign and could still have a telling impact with the playoffs coming up.

As a result, it is little surprise that the England under-19 international has been rumoured with a move away from the Stadium of Light ahead of the summer.

With that being said, a stay in the northeast now looks more likely for Rigg, regardless of what happens against Coventry City in the coming days.

Rigg could be set for Sunderland stay

Everything that happens throughout the window for the Mackems will likely have a telling impact on what happens moving into the new campaign.

It will be so different in the Premier League for Regis Le Bris and Co., although there may be some stars that will continue to be linked with a move away, no matter the division.

One of those will be Rigg, and another is certain to be Jobe Bellingham, who has also been strongly discussed with a summer departure.

This appears to have taken a step closer to going through as Jurgen Klopp looks likely to have an impact on taking the midfielder to RB Leipzig rather than Borussia Dortmund [Sport Bild, 7 May].

A deal in the region of £21.3-25.6million could go through in the coming weeks, which could represent bad news for the Black Cats.

On the flip side, this could put Le Bris in a position to refuse any offers for Rigg, and as a result, a stay could be more likely as it stands.

Bellingham sacrifice to keep Rigg at Sunderland

There is no doubt that every Sunderland fan would love to keep hold of both of their star midfielders moving into the new season.

If promotion isn’t achieved, it does feel unlikely that both will stay on at the Stadium of Light, which will come as a blow.

With that being said, keeping Rigg would likely be a preferred option for supporters given his link to the local area and his tender age.

Similar can be said of Dan Neil, who fans will want to see more of next campaign alongside the teenager in what could be a difficult year, no matter what league.
