Chris Mepham ‘back to his best’ after what he did away from Sunderland

Sunderland will be pleased that Chris Mepham appears to be returning to form ahead of the final eight games of the campaign.

Sunderland will be fully aware of the need to return to form in the Championship after what has been a disappointing few weeks in terms of results and performances.

Promotion remains achievable for Sunderland, though only through the playoffs, with the latest 3-0 defeat to Coventry City all but ending any hopes they had of a top-two finish.

If that is to be achieved, it will be imperative that players are at their best for the final run-in, and Mepham‘s latest display with Wales should provide optimism.

Wales display showcases why Mepham will be crucial

Sunderland have suffered several injury concerns defensively over the international break, making it even more important that those available are at their best.

Thankfully, it seems like Mepham is back to those levels, having played a huge role in Wales‘ recent draw with North Macedonia.

Via FotMob, the Welshman completed 95 per cent of his 83 attempted passes in the game, an attribute that will be key for Sunderland when he returns.

Three of his five attempted long balls reached their desired target, with Mephman recording 96 touches in the game over the 90 minutes.

100 per cent of his attempted tackles resulted in Mepham winning possession, while the 27-year-old won nine of his 13 defensive duels in the clash, seven of which were in the air.

If Sunderland are to get promoted, Mepham will need to be able to replicate this display for the remainder of the Championship season.

Sunderland need to get back to their best

Sunderland have certainly warranted their position in the table, though unless form improves, it will count for nothing at the end of the season.

The Black Cats have an excellent shot at winning promotion this season and ending their eight-year absence from the Premier League.

A home encounter with Millwall is up next for Regis Le Bris’ side; a game in which they need to pick up three points.
