Chelsea set to squander Sunderland transfer as Lois Openda update emerges

Lois Openda was linked with a move to Sunderland earlier this summer.

After Sunderland’s 2-1 win against Brentford, you’d have to dig deep to find anything negative about the Wearsiders’ season so far.

However, a lack of clinical ability in the final third is certainly something that has been spoken about on more than one occasion.

Sunderland were linked with Openda to rectify that, but Chelsea may have just made a decision that has severely impacted their ability to pull that transfer off.

Chelsea pull plug on Nicolas Jackson transfer as Bayern Munich focus shifts

As showcased by various Premier League clubs this summer, signing a striker isn’t as easy as it often sounds on paper.

Bayern were looking to sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea, but after Liam Delap suffered an injury in their victory against Fulham, they pulled the plug at the very last minute.

Now, Bayern have turned their attention to Sunderland-linked forward Openda, according to Sacha Tavolieri on X.

Openda’s time at Leipzig.

He posted: “FC Bayern Munich’s now thinking about Lois Openda on loan with option to buy, which could be mandatory as Nicolas Jackson’s deal is in doubt.”

Openda would be a ridiculous addition at Sunderland, but with just under 48 hours remaining in the transfer window, it is one that is certainly looking unlikely.

Sunderland are still looking to sign a forward before Monday’s deadline, and after another win at the Stadium of Light, it will be interesting to see if they achieve that.

Sunderland set for hectic end to summer transfer window

Two new arrivals will take the headlines if the Black Cats can find appropriate deals, though Sunderland still have a lot of work to do to shift on the fringe players.

Ian Poveda’s future is up in the air at Sunderland, with several others expected to depart before 7pm on Monday.

Alan Browne, Dan Neil and Jenson Seelt are just three others who have been mooted for an exit, showcasing how busy these last two days are likely to be.
