Championship clubs circle for ‘talented’ Sunderland star ahead of January window
Sunderland could sanction several exits in the January transfer window.
Despite being in December, Sunderland already look safe from relegation, having picked up 26 points from their 16 Premier League encounters.
Their business is likely to reflect that in January, with Kyril Louis-Dreyfus aiming for a top 10 finish come the end of the season.
Several incomings will be expected at the Stadium of Light, but a handful of exits will also have to be sanctioned, with Southampton one of several Championship clubs set to offer an escape route to one of their forgotten stars.

Anthony Patterson could leave Sunderland in January
Robin Roefs has been immense for Sunderland this season, but had it not been for Anthony Patterson‘s heroics, particularly in the play-off final, this season would likely have been played in the second tier.
The 25-year-old was an ever-present for the Black Cats prior to their promotion, and when links first emerged back in 2023 connecting him with a move, Carlton Palmer described him as a “young, talented goalkeeper.”
Patterson’s stats for Sunderland in the Championship last season.
- 42 appearances
- 14 clean sheets
- 91 saves
- 68.4% save percentage
According to Alan Nixon via his Patreon, his lack of gametime in the Premier League could lead to a loan move in January, with QPR, Southampton and Leicester City all taking an interest.
Marti Cifuentes has spoken highly of Patterson in the past, making a move to the Foxes seem more than feasible.

However, the goalkeeper may not be the only one on the move this winter, with several other fringe players in limbo.
Who else could leave Sunderland in January?
Sunderland’s impressive campaign in the Premier League has put the spotlight on their star performers, but also seen many of those who were at the club last season be forgotten.
Ian Poveda, Timothee Pembele and Joe Anderson all remain contracted to the Wearsiders, yet none of them have even made a matchday squad this season, and it was a very similar story in the Championship last season.
Abdoullah Ba is another who could leave Sunderland, in what will be a busy January transfer window by all accounts.
