Calvert-Lewin and Serie A winner – Three free agents Sunderland could sign

Sunderland could look to bolster their squad with a few pickups from the free agent market.

The Black Cats are on course to make Premier League history with the money spent so far this summer, and that will no doubt continue over the next few weeks.

However, the benefit that can be received from scouting the free agent market cannot be overlooked as Sunderland prepare for life back in the Premier League.

With that in mind, Mackem News has picked out three potential free agent bargains that the Wearsiders could look into.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin could revive his career at Sunderland

Everton announced the departure of Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer, and he would be a neat pickup for several clubs, under one condition.

If Sunderland could offer a pay-as-you-play deal, it would make sense for both parties, who certainly have a point to prove in the Premier League.

With Marc Guiu set to sign on loan from Chelsea, the Black Cats are fairly well equipped in the striker department, but Calvert-Lewin could offer something completely different.

Jairo Reidewald could be the new Luke O’Nien

Luke O’Nien is a fan favourite at Sunderland, and much of that comes down to his ability to play in several different positions.

The same can be said for former Crystal Palace midfielder Jairo Riedwald, who is now available on a free transfer.

Injuries have also played a part in his regression over the years, but with 80 Premier League appearances, he knows what it takes to compete in the top flight.

Davide Calabria could rival Trai Hume

Trai Hume is a nailed-on starter for the Black Cats, but the lack of competition for his place is somewhat of a concern.

Niall Huggins is second in line, but his injury troubles over the last few years will have alarm bells ringing, and Davide Calabria would be a great pickup.

The Italian’s 18-year stay at AC Milan ended this summer, where he won one Serie A title, and at 28 years old, he certainly still has more to give.
