Burns joins Sunderland as another midfielder agrees terms of Stadium of Light
Sunderland have secured the signing of talented midfielder Matthew Burns, with more incomings set to follow.
Burns, 16, joins the Mackems from Coleraine, having already made his senior debut in the Northern Ireland first division this season.
Following Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League, the Black Cats are looking to improve for the present and the future with another midfielder expected to follow Burns through the door.

Sunderland set to bolster midfield with Noah Sadiki signing
After losing Jobe Bellingham in June, the Mackems have already welcomed new record signing Habib Diarra to the Stadium of Light.
The Senegalese international joined Regis Le Bris’ side after Sunderland beat rivals Leeds to his signature in a statement of intent.
Now, the Black Cats are looking to add further depth to their midfield, with Noah Sadiki widely reported in both Belgium and England to be joining Sunderland.
The newly promoted Mackems will pay a fee said to be in the region of £17million for the versatile Congo international from Union Saint-Gilloise.
The 20-year-old began his career as a full-back but transitioned into a strong central midfielder who is suited to the Premier League.
At such a young age, Sadiki could slot straight into Le Bris’ midfield with the likes of Diarra and Dan Neil potentially around him in a three.
However, with Neil potentially departing the Wearside club, the Black Cats may be forced to make further additions alongside Sadiki, Diarra and Burns.
Sunderland have already shown their pulling power this season, having broken their transfer record, and Sadiki could join a list of statement signings for the Wearside club.

Sunderland’s transfer strategy could prove crucial in battle to stay up
In recent seasons, there’s been a trend of sides spending big after promotion to the Premier League but still being relegated.
Last season, Ipswich spent more than £100million but still failed to stay afloat in the top flight.
Sunderland | Transfer fee |
Enzo Le Fee | £19.2m |
Habib Diarra | £30m |
Noah Sadiki* | £17.2m* |
However, the Tractor Boys spent their money on the wrong players, as their investment in Championship players failed.
Signing young talent from Europe could instead prove a masterstroke for the Black Cats and has the potential to change the tide for future promoted sides.
All eyes are already on Sunderland.
