‘Ballard future in doubt at Sunderland’ as most likely Diakite outcome emerges

Dan Ballard could be on his way out of Sunderland this summer.

Sunderland are still looking to be active in the summer transfer market, having already sealed six new additions ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Their midfield has been bolstered significantly, while a couple of attacking arrivals have injected some quality in the final third.

Now, the focus will be on adding numbers to their defensive options, though it could spell bad news for Ballard, who played a crucial role in Sunderland’s promotion.

Sunderland eye Bafode Diakite transfer

It has already been claimed that Ballard could attract interest if he loses his place in the starting 11 under Regis Le Bris next season, and with several defenders linked, it is a possibility.

The latest is Bafode Diakite, who has emerged on Sunderland’s radar this summer, according to a report from Le Petit Lillois (13 July),

The report adds that Sunderland are the most likely to reach the demands set by Lille for the transfer of the defender, with Bournemouth also linked.

His arrival isn’t likely to displace Ballard from one of the two starting positions, though it will start to cast a shadow of doubt over his future.

Sunderland need defensive arrivals

Two centre-backs and a full-back will be needed for the Black Cats this summer, with injury concerns over several of their regular full-backs.

Luke O’Nien and Dennis Cirkin are already confirmed to be missing the start of the season, leaving them short across the backline.

However, after such an impressive start to the window, the recruitment team have certainly earned themselves some trust, and will no doubt be well aware of what they need to do before the season opener at home to West Ham.
