Axel Disasi details failed Sunderland move after early transfer approach
Sunderland tried to bring Axel Disasi to the Stadium of Light in the summer window.
Sunderland’s summer transfer business raised eyebrows in the Premier League, though their search for a new centre-back went down to the wire.
Efforts to bring Jhon Lucumi to Sunderland fell short at the last hurdle, before the Black Cats sealed the deadline day arrival of Lutsharel Geetruida on a season-long loan from Leipzig.
However, prior to that, Sunderland were said to have made an approach for Disasi, who has since spoken out about the interest from the Wearsiders.

Sunderland project interested Axel Disasi
Sunderland have recruited some high-profile names this summer, and a lot of it was down to the work done by Florent Ghisolfi.
Kyril Louis-Dreyfus provided the funds, and Ghisolfi worked his magic to entice some big names to the Stadium of Light.
They made an attempt to bring Disasi to Wearside, though the deal failed to come to anything, with Chelsea’s French defender speaking out about the interest.

Via the CARRE YouTube channel, he said: “If I look at things chronologically, Sunderland, when they arrived, from the outside, a great project.
“Promoted, invested a lot this summer, invested in a lot of French people. But they arrived quite early in the transfer window.
“So my thinking wasn’t that advanced, and I didn’t necessarily follow up, even if the interest was rewarding, because, as I told you, there was the French coach and quite a few good things.”
Sunderland better off without Axel Disasi
Had Disasi joined, it’s highly unlikely that the Black Cats would have also followed through with a move for Geertruida.
With Regis Le Bris hailing Geertruida’s versatility, that certainly seems to have been the smarter deal, especially given the amount of rotation that will be needed when AFCON comes around in December.
Disasi’s loan at Aston Villa saw concerns emerge over his ability, though mainly when operating as a right-back, which may have been part of the reason a move failed to happen to Sunderland or elsewhere.
Ultimately, Sunderland’s recruitment team have worked wonders in such a short space of time, and their judgement holds a lot of value at the Stadium of Light, meaning this is unlikely to be a deal that anyone looks back on as a missed opportunity.
