Ashes legend threatens to go into hibernation if Sunderland and Newcastle scenario plays out

Sunderland are set to take on Newcastle on Sunday, with Ashes legend Steve Harmison planning on going into “hibernation” if the Magpies are trashed.

It is no doubt the biggest game of the season for the Black Cats as they look to continue their excellent form against their biggest rivals.

Sunderland have already had an injury boost ahead of the Newcastle game, as they look to pick up their first derby victory since 2015.

However, Newcastle are the favourites at the Stadium of Light, despite the Black Cats going into the match higher in the table.

Nevertheless, this has not extinguished Harmison’s concerns going into the game.

Steve Harmison: I will go into hibernation if Sunderland trash Newcastle

On top of being known for his illustrious cricket career, Harmison is recognised Newcastle supporter.

The 47-year-old has commonly featured on talkSPORT to discuss the Magpies, and this once again occurred on 12 December.

However, despite Newcastle’s recent uplift in form, he remains sceptical, as he hopes that Sunderland will not batter the Magpies just like how Australia are trashing England in the latest Ashes series.

He said: “If Newcastle get beaten on Sunday the way England have, I’m going into hibernation.”

Regis Le Bris: I hope the players can manage the atmosphere vs Newcastle

The Stadium of Light is no doubt going to be rocking come Sunday.

Many Black Cats fans will believe that they are capable of pulling off another famous victory over their rivals, given their form.

However, it is set to be a different test for many of the players, with multiple stars yet to play in a Tyne-Wear derby.

Ahead of the game, Regis Le Bris expressed his hope to Chronicle Live on 12 December that his stars would be able to manage this atmosphere.

He said: “We’ve had good experiences at the Stadium of Light this season. It’s been loud and I expect the same against Newcastle.

“So far, the players have managed this really well and changed the dynamic when needed. I hope it’ll be the same again.

“At home we have this advantage and it’ll be important. We play with this energy and it’ll be important.”
