Anthony Patterson shares what Sunderland players are doing for Tommy Watson

Sunderland have not had a successful April, with pressure on the squad mounting before the play-offs.

Since the club secured a play-off spot at the beginning of the month, their form has taken a dramatic downturn.

Sunderland are now without a win in their last four games, including three consecutive losses.

Much of the team and now feeling the heat, with Regis Le Bris criticised for gambling too much with the starting XI in recent games.

Exit-bound winger Tommy Watson has also been targeted by the unhappy Sunderland fan base, as Anthony Patterson explains what the squad is doing to support their teammate.

Sunderland are doing ‘everything they can’ for Watson

After coming through the Sunderland Academy, Watson has been another breakout star this season.

The 19-year-old has been a regular throughout the campaign and netted his first two professional goals against Stoke City in December.

Therefore, it was heartbreaking when it was confirmed that Watson would be leaving Sunderland at the end of the campaign to join Brighton and Hove Albion.

Yet, since the move became official, many have questioned the youngster’s mentality, especially after the recent dip in form.

Many fans felt Watson’s performance against Bristol City was “disgraceful” as the club fell to yet another defeat.

As a result, the forward was booed off for the display despite being a young age.

Now, Patterson has explained what they are doing to help Watson through this tough period.

He told the Sunderland Echo (23 April): “We’re just helping Tommy as much as we can. Yeah, that’s all we can do really.”

Sunderland fans need to start supporting Watson through the last few games

Despite the contrasting opinions of recent Watson’s performances, he does not deserve to be booed.

The youngster is still only 19 years old and has been phenomenal throughout most of the campaign.

It will do no one any good booing the forward going into the play-offs as it will only damage the squad’s morale.

Instead, criticism should be reserved until the end of the season when Sunderland’s fate is confirmed and Watson is no longer a Black Cats player.

However, until then, supporters should reserve judgment on Watson as he could still become a hero in the play-offs if he helps the club return to the Premier League.
