Amy Goddard reacts to first goal for Sunderland Women

Amy Goddard was “delighted” to get her first goal for Sunderland Women on Sunday as the Black Cats emerged as 4-0 winners in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

Sunderland Women continued their winning run against Huddersfield on 8 December, having recently seen off Blackburn Rovers in the League Cup and Sheffield United in the league.

Eleanor Dale’s been in the spotlight in recent weeks but Goddard took it on Sunday having scored her first goal for the club, which she reflected on in her post-match interview after the game with Sunderland’s club channels [8 December].

“Absolutely delighted to get my first goal for Sunderland,” Goddard said. “Really good day for all of us and the team. Professional performance from all of us as well. I feel like we could have put a few in, but yeah, I just think overall it was a good and professional performance.

“The goal was amazing. I just felt like it was coming. I’ve had a lot of disallowed goals as well over the past couple of seasons. So yeah, for me to get my first goal, I’m really happy.

Sunderland Women have found their stride

It was a slow start to the campaign for the Black Cats having won just two of their opening six encounters in all competitions.

One of those games was of course the record-breaking Tyne-Wear Derby in which Mel Reay’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United.

However, since then, her side have found their feet and have won the six following games including a local derby against Durham United.

There was never any doubting the quality in the squad after a near-perfect campaign last time out, but getting that quality translated into performances proved to be the tricky part, although Reay appears to have found the winning formula.

Winning games breeds confidence and that confidence can very quickly turn into momentum, as seen with their recent run of form, and it is vital that the Black Cats continue their impressive run to have a chance of success this season.

In other Sunderland news, the Black Cats are unlikely to change their January approach says Don Goodman.
