Ally McCoist agrees with Jeff Stelling after what Robin Roefs did in Sunderland draw vs Aston Villa

Sunderland secured a point at home to Aston Villa on Sunday, despite playing an hour with 10 men.

If there is one thing about this Sunderland side that cannot be questioned, it is the level of character within the squad.

It was on full display again on Sunday, when Sunderland fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, despite being reduced to ten men after the half-hour mark.

Wilson Isidor scored again for Sunderland, but it was Robin Roefs who caught the attention for his involvement in the opening goal.

Robin Roefs will be disappointed not to save Matty Cash effort

It was Matty Cash who got Reinildo sent off for Sunderland, so it was almost inevitable that he would be the man to break the deadlock at the Stadium of Light.

After a crunching tackle from Trai Hume, the Villans won a corner, which was played out to Cash on the edge of the box.

Under no pressure, the Poland international fired an effort towards goal, and seemingly through the hands of Roefs, and both Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist have said that the Dutchman should have done better with it.

Via talkSPORT, Stelling said: “I thought the goalkeeper was at fault with the goal, by the way, but he has had a great season.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt about it,” replied McCoist, ” I think he’s got to save it.

“If you’re trying to look at it and say ‘why did he make the mistake’, I think it probably moved, but he’s got to save it; you’re absolutely right.”

Sunderland will win more points than they lose with Robin Roefs

Despite the error by Roefs, he still had a solid performance against the side that finished sixth in the Premier League last season.

His control of the penalty area was top-notch, and his early double save subdued the pressure from Aston Villa right from the off.

Roefs has been magnificent for Sunderland in every other game, and one slight blip will not take away from those performances.

If there is one thing these players have shown, it is their ability to bounce back from setbacks, and it will be no different for the 22-year-old.
