Alan Shearer predicts what’ll happen in Sunderland vs Leeds after what he’s seen

Alan Shearer believes that Sunderland will maintain their unbeaten home run against Leeds.

Sunderland host Leeds at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, in the final game of what has been a remarkable 2025.

The Black Cats have defied expectations in the Premier League, and a win against the Whites could see them finish the year inside the top four.

Not only that, but Regis Le Bris’ side will be looking to extend their unbeaten run at the Stadium of Light, and Shearer thinks that will happen.

Shearer shares key for Leeds United

Sunderland may be favourites to beat Leeds this weekend, but having already suffered defeat to fellow newcomers Burnley this season, they will be wary of getting overconfident.

Despite a poor start to the campaign, Leeds have been in excellent form as of late, with the Whites now six points above the drop zone.

Sunderland-linked Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been key to that success, with Shearer highlighting his importance for the visitors.

Via the Metro, Shearer said in his prediction: “Sunderland got a great point at Brighton and didn’t seem to miss the players that have gone on AFCON duty. It’s tough to predict; it could go either way, so I’m going to say draw.

“Sunderland are strong at home and haven’t been beaten there yet.

Leeds are on a great run. They’ve just got to keep getting balls in for Calvert-Lewin. Two goals at the weekend, full of confidence, just keep getting the ball up to him and into the box.

Sunderland have 23-year record to overcome

Given the size of the two clubs, it’s quite remarkable that this will be the first meeting in the top flight since Leeds secured a 2-1 victory at the Stadium of Light back in 2002.

Of the 11 meetings since then, 10 have been played in the Championship, while the other was an FA Cup win for the Black Cats back in 2015.

Sunderland‘s last win against Leeds in the top flight was in August 2002, when Jason McAteer scored early in the second half to secure a 1-0 win.

Their last home Premier League win against the Whites was a year prior to that, with Julio Arca and Kevin Phillips on the scoresheet.

Given the form of Sunday’s visitors, a narrow victory would be more than welcome.
