Alan Shearer ‘outs himself as a coward’ with reaction to Sunderland victory on Match of the Day
Alan Shearer was seething to see Sunderland doing well back in the Premier League.
Sunderland’s summer transfer business led to a remarkable amount of optimism heading into the Premier League campaign, and that was only amplified by the scenes at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
Regis Le Bris’ side secured an emphatic 3-0 victory over West Ham, despite the fact that they had eight debutants making an appearance.
After an eight-year absence, Sunderland returned to Match of the Day as the featured game of the weekend, and the level of arrogance from Shearer was a downright disgrace.

Wayne Rooney full of praise while Shearer sits emotionless
The level of insight provided by Match of the Day pundits has deteriorated significantly over the last 12 months, but Saturday night’s show took it to a whole new level.
Wayne Rooney was the one tasked with dissecting Sunderland’s opening day victory, and he was full of praise for the Black Cats and the way they handled the occasion.
Rooney was particularly impressed by Habib Diarra, who joined Sunderland in a club-record deal from Strasbourg this summer.
Diarra’s game vs West Ham by numbers.
- 10.6 km covered
- 31.4km/h top speed
- 0.24 xG + xA
- 50% shot accuracy
- 2 clearances
- 3 recoveries
However, while Rooney was rightfully lauding the Black Cats for their performance, Shearer remained completely silent in footage shared by Match of the Day on 16 August, refusing to give Sunderland credit for what was a momentous occasion.
Pundits are supposed to be neutral and provide tactical insight into the game, and yet Shearer provided nothing but embarrassment.
Instead, he sat there trying to suppress his anger at the fact that Sunderland are back, and they are not just here to take part.
Sunderland are going to prove everyone wrong this season
Last season, it took the newly-promoted teams until October to manage a win in the Premier League, and for Sunderland, it took just 90 minutes.
Not only did they win, they hammered Graham Potter’s side 3-0, which is a result bigger than any of the three relegated sides managed throughout the entire campaign.
Of course, 37 games are still to be played, but the signs from the Stadium of Light are remarkably positive, and there is still more to come.
Nordi Mukiele’s pending arrival will add even more defensive solidity, while the Black Cats still have a handful of players to return from injury and make this season something special.
