Alan Shearer drops Sunderland admission after win vs Chelsea – ‘As much as it pains me…’

Sunderland fans can hardly believe their eyes as they moved up to fourth in the Premier League after beating Chelsea 2-1 on Saturday.

Regis Le Bris continues to excel in the Premier League, and Sunderland have transformed their Stadium of Light form to their performances on the road.

Sunderland’s win at Stamford Bridge has highlighted their ambitions to achieve more than top-flight survival, and they are currently on track to do much more.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer reacted to the win over Chelsea, as the Black Cats ended the weekend in fourth.

Alan Shearer raves about Sunderland’s start to the season

Sunderland sit eight places above Newcastle in the table, much to the annoyance of Shearer and Geordie supporters.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast on 27 October, Shearer admitted the fantastic job that Le Bris has been doing.

He said: “The coach has done such a brilliant job, hasn’t he, Regis Le bris. His track record was not sensational before Sunderland. He was at Lorient, got them relegated, and he lost his job there before Sunderland appointed him.

“They’ve had an unbelievable start, brilliant results, and some great performances. I know their fans are pretty much enjoying it. Yeah, well done Sunderland, you have been superb.

“But I don’t think many of the fans would have thought they were going to go to Chelsea and win the game and get the three points in the way they did. They’ve had a brilliant start. As much as it pains me and hurts me to say it, you have to say it, well done to them.”

Sunderland were predicted to be relegated at the start of the season, yet that is a far cry from what we’re currently seeing unfold.

For now, fans are enjoying each game as it comes, yet the future is looking incredibly bright for everyone connected with Sunderland.

The next two matches see the Black Cats return to the Stadium of Light for games against Everton and Arsenal, and four points out of these six games could outline this Sunderland team as a serious contender for European football.

An added bonus for Sunderland fans is their advantage over Newcastle at this moment in time.

Sunderland on course to finish above Newcastle

Despite achieving Champions League qualification in two of the last three seasons, Newcastle have started the season poorly, languishing in 12th place in the Premier League table.

Despite there only being five points to separate the two sides, the mood amongst Sunderland fans could not be any happier, whilst Magpies supporters have been left frustrated with some of their performances.

This is the first time that both teams have played in the Premier League at the same time since 2015-2016, and the matches against each other will hold a significant weight on which set of fans will hold the bragging rights at the end of the season.

The first Tyne-Wear derby takes place at the Stadium of Light on 14 December, and it has the potential to be one of the most memorable matches in the rivalry’s history.

If Sunderland do win that first clash, then it could propel them to finishing above their arch-rivals.
