Aaron Connolly makes new Sunderland contract admission

Aaron Connolly has admitted that he wants to stay at Sunderland beyond the year he is currently contracted to.

The Irishman joined Sunderland on a free transfer and signed a one-year contract as he looks to get his career back on track after facing several barriers in his private life.

However, in an interview with the Sunderland Echo (29 October), Connolly revealed he wants to remain at the club.

He said: “Of course (I’m hoping to stay). It’s only a year and I had that at Hull, it’s tough to get settled. I was hoping I might get two years at Hull but that wasn’t how it worked out. I was planning on maybe buying a place etc. That side of it, I want to get settled somewhere.

“I had that at Brighton and I was flying for a while, but then you’re bouncing around places. I don’t want to be this journeyman footballer at 26, who has had nine, 10 clubs. And this is some club.

“It’s a nice place and it’s what I needed. It’s a quiet place where I can get back to working, focusing on football. It’s definitely somewhere I could see myself staying for a long time.”

Aaron Connolly could be a promotion wildcard for Sunderland

Connolly is a fantastic footballer and no matter what happens on or off the pitch, you never lose that ability.

The Irishman has faced several barriers in his career so far and found himself moving from club to club and very rarely can a player succeed in those circumstances.

Those at Sunderland have seen first-hand what it can do to a player when they find a home. Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts are two brilliant examples of players who found themselves moving from one club to another each season before ending up on Wearside and playing their best football yet.

The same can happen for Connolly. He has a proven ability to score goals at any level and with the right guidance and support, he can get back to playing his best football.

Currently, there are very few better clubs to achieve that than at Sunderland and hopefully, Connolly can play a huge part in the club’s push for promotion.
