View: 94% attacking gem has been best Sunderland player this season
Sunderland’s Romaine Mundle has been the club’s best player so far this season despite several players performing at the top of their game.
Due to what has been a remarkable start to the campaign for Regis Le Bris’ side, the Black Cats currently occupy the top spot in the Championship having lost on just two occasions.
A draw against Leeds at the Stadium of Light in their most recent fixture kept the Wearsiders’ unbeaten home run intact with Illan Meslier to thank as a result of his last-minute howler.
Players such as Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg have been earning plaudits for their high-level performances at such young ages but Mundle has been instrumental in Sunderland’s successes so far.
Romaine Mundle has filled the boots left by Jack Clarke at Sunderland
In stats provided by FotMob, Mundle has been the Black Cats’ highest-rated player with an average score of 7.75, only bettered by Ollie Arblaster of Sheffield United.
The tricky winger was questioned as to how well he could replace Jack Clarke, who left the club to join Ipswich Town in the summer. However, many fans have been left feeling as if the club have upgraded.

Mundle’s key attribute has been his ability to break with pace and beat defenders with his close-control dribbling and with an astounding 19 completed dribbles thus far, it places him in the top 98.4 per cent in the league for that specific accolade.
The former Tottenham Hotspur academy prospect is Sunderland’s top scorer so far this season having notched on three occasions and whilst he hasn’t officially registered any assists, his level of creativity has been on show.
To put into context, those three goals have risen from a total xG (expected goals) of just 1.14, demonstrating just how good some of his trikes have been.
One other key attribute Mundle has excelled in, outlines his defensive work rate. The winger has been shown his commitment to tracking back and helping his side out of possession, winning 52 per cent of his duels.
His passing game has also been on point. He makes on average 16.3 accurate passes per game (85 per cent), and 5.1 per game in his own half (94 per cent) and 12.3 in the opposition half (70 per cent). (SofaScore).
Much of Sunderland’s success this season will be down to the availability of Mundle who, as of now, has started every league encounter since Clarke’s departure after gameweek two.
